Evaluation of Medical Audit System of Screening Breast Imaging Examinations

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the status of medical audit system in hospitals performing breast screening examinations.
Materials and Methods: We performed a survey about the medical audit of breast screening examinations in hospitals. We sent the questionnaire at 90 members of society of breast screening a breast radiologists and the response rate was 46% (41/90 sites). Survey included the scale of center, status of mammographic interpretation, performance of screening examination and medical audit, recognition status about medical audit and commercial software for medical audit.
Results: Thirty nine % (16/41) of the responders performed medical audit for screening mammography and ultrasound. Eighty eight % (22/25) of the responders who did not perform medical audit recognized the necessity of the system. The main reason not to perform was the shortage of manpower and time. The most important thing to implement medical audit system was development of a software program for audit (52%, 13/25), and education and information activity (28%, 7/25) were followed. Data recoding and analysis were performed by colleagues (56%, 9/16). Eighty one % (33/41) of the responders worked for the general or university hospitals.
Conclusion: Thirty nine % (16/41) of the breast radiologists performed medical audit for screening mammography and ultrasound. Almost all radiologists not performing medical audit already noticed the importance of the audit. Shortage of manpower and time was the main reason not to perform medical audit. Development of a software program and standardized audit method should be introduced to implement the audit system.
